William Paul Shafer, Sr.

William Paul Shafer, Sr., 81, formerly of Klyce Street, passed away early Friday morning, January 11, 2013, at Morehead Nursing Center in Eden.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, January 13, at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Shafer was born August 5, 1931 in Morgantown, WV; son of the late Russell and Gladys Bowers Shafer.He was married to the love of his life, his wife, "Babe" Griffin Shafer on October 20, 1951 and that union continued for 58 years until her death in 2009. He was also preceded in death by sisters Betty Switzer, Phyllis "Sis" Nine; brothers Bob Shafer and Tom Shafer all of WVa. He was a US Navy veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Shafer was a long time member of El Bethel Presbyterian Church but most recently attended Immanuel Friends Church. He was a retired dispatcher for Roadway Trucking Company and after retirement, he enjoyed yardwork, flowers and being outdoors. Mr. Shafer loved to help people.

He is survived by his son, William "Billy" Shafer, Jr. and wife, Jennifer of Eden; daughter, Cindy White and husband, Johnny of Stoneville; two sisters, Poke Myers and husband, Johnny of Tunnelton, WV and Nancy McDonald of WV; three grandchildren, William "Sonny" Shafer, III and wife, Stephanie of Eden, Meredith Rodrigues and husband, Danny of Summerfield and Angela White of Raleigh; four great-grandchildren, Ryne, Callie, Claire and Reese Rodrigues; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to say a special thanks to "his girls", Sabrina Jumper, Ann Marie Wilson and Dianna Mitchell who provided loving care to Mr. Shafer during the last four years; and also to the Morehead Nursing Staff, East Hall.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service (2 - 2:45 pm) at Fair Funeral Home before travelling to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions may be made to Relay For Life of Rockingham County, Greensboro (NC) Office, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407-2145 or to Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
