William “Bill” Roosevelt Setliff, 90, of Eden, passed away peacefully on Monday evening, September 11, 2023 at his daughter’s home.
A funeral service will be held at 11am Saturday, September 16, 2023, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel in Eden with burial to follow at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm Friday, September 15, 2023, at Fair Funeral Home.
Mr. Setliff was born October 3, 1932 in Draper, NC, to J.E. and Fannie Glenn Setliff. He retired from Duke Power in 1988 after 37 years. He was a volunteer fireman for Draper Fire Department and was voted Draper Fireman of the year in 1968.
Mr. Setliff also served in the National Guard from 1952 to 1955. He was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church where he served in many positions and was voted “Father of the Year” in 1989. He was very active in his community, serving in the Y’s Men’s Club, Fireman’s Relief Fund, United Way Committee, and Board of Trustees of the Red Cross. He was also a certified EMT, and Instructor for Red Cross and Rockingham Community College. Mr. Setliff was also a member of the Tri-City Rescue Squad and served as Chief for 8 years.
He was a member of Habitat for Humanity and a member of The Fieldcresters Quartet. They released 2 albums and their music was telecast throughout NC, Virginia, and Tennessee.
Mr. Setliff is survived by his 4 children, Teresa Walker of Eden, Charles Setliff of Reidsville, Sandra Chambers of Eden, and Tim Setliff (Donna) of Reidsville, special “adopted” son, Lanney Gilley of Shallotte, and special “adopted” daughter, Vicki Barrow Gibson of Reidsville.
“Poppa”, as he was called, was also survived by 7 grandchildren, Jeremy (Lisa), Josh (Crystal), Lori (Bryan), Lynn (Corey), Stephen (Tracy), Leslie (Bryan), and Matt. He has 23 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Bobby Setliff (Linda) of Longs, SC.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Setliff was preceded in death by his loving wife, Polly, and grandsons, Charles Setliff, Jr. and Raymond “Marty” Rutledge, daughter-in-law, Angela Carpenter Setliff, son-in-law, David Chambers, brothers, Frank, Paul, and Gene, and sisters, Ruby and Pauline.
The family wishes to thank the special nurses and aides of Hospice of Rockingham County and Dr. Paul Sasser.
