William "Bill" Elbert Smith

February 10, 1929 — May 7, 2021

William “Bill” Elbert Smith, 92, passed away early Friday morning, May 7, 2021, at his home.

He will lie in repose on Sunday afternoon from 2 pm to 5 pm at Fair Funeral Home for those wishing to come by to pay their respects.  The service will be held privately. The family will gather at the home of Mr. Smith.

Born February 10, 1929 in Danville, VA, Mr. Smith was the son of the late General Scott Smith and Bessie Boulding Smith.  He was a Korean War Army veteran and was a retiree of Mize Motors where he worked for many years in their body shop.  Bill was a member of Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Bell Smith of Eden; three sons, Larry Smith (JoAnne) of Eden, Mark Smith (Lita) of Madison, AL and Wayne Smith of Washington, DC; daughters, Cynthia Smith (Tony London) of Stoneville, Shirley Price (Gary) of Stoneville, Judy Portner (Dave) of Midlothian, VA,  Janet Nunn (Jim) of Hanover, PA, Nancy Bartlett (Rex) of Stoneville, Billie Jean Snuggs (Lee) of Albemarle and Rosemary Sams (Doug) of Suffolk, VA. 

“Daddy Bill” is also survived by his 17 grandchildren, Angela Smith of Eden, Jessica Smith of Virginia Beach, VA, Jamie Smith of Arlington, VA, Lauran Combs McClure (Barry) of Raleigh, Carter Combs (Renee) of Stoneville, Meredith Combs Williams (Bubba) of New Braunfels, TX, Amanda Price Ormsby (Robbie) of Rockingham VA, Kari Price White (Joey) of Reidsville, Ashley Portner Holzer (Nathaniel) of Midlothian, VA, Rebecca Portner of Midlothian, VA, Jack Nunn of Hanover, PA, James Nunn of Hanover, PA, David Bartlett of Mebane, Witt Snuggs of Albemarle, Andrew Watson (Rebecca) of Bailey, Mary Sams Catlin (Evan) of Suffolk, VA and Ryan Sams of Suffolk, VA; 13 great-grandchildren, Savannah Kallam, Stella McClure, Kate McClure, Miles McClure, Guy Kelly “Bear” Williams, Campbell Grace Williams, Ragan White, Joseph “Tripp” White, Elin Ormsby, Baby Girl Ormsby, Whitley Watson, Adam Catlin and Elizabeth Catlin; Beloved Cousins, Louise Fulcher Whitt and Jr.Thornton with whom he roamed the hills and river of Spray NC as children; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Theodore “Teddy” Smith; sisters, Pauline Smith Smith and Ola Smith Perkins Meeks; son, Joseph Scott “Scotty” Smith; and grandsons, Marvin D. Sams (Trey) and Smith William Snuggs.
