A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 4th at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway, VA. Visitation will be held at Fair Funeral Home in Eden on Monday, October 3rd from 5 to 7 p.m.
Bill was born on January 4th, 1931 in Martinsville, VA, to Theressa Mae Cox Harris and William Ballard Harris Sr. After growing up on a farm and graduating from high school in Ridgeway, VA, he enlisted in the US Air Force. From training in Texas to advancing to Crew Chief of the B-29 Superfortress Bomber, his stories and passion for the B-29 lasted his lifetime. He married the love of his life, Reva Eanes Harris, on December 27, 1952, and carried her back to Texas for the remainder of his service duties. They returned to Leaksville, NC to build a home and raise a family. Bill became a member of Osborne Baptist Church, where he served multiple terms as a deacon/treasurer and where his membership still resides. He was a graduate of Perry Business School in Martinsville, Va., and was the co-owner of Auto Parts and Accessories in Leaksville for over 27 years before moving on to other business ventures. He founded Harris True Value Hardware in Martinsville, VA, where he remained until his retirement. He loved his family and spent his time putting their needs first. While retired, he enjoyed exploring the country in his RV, even returning to Texas to volunteer as a mechanic on a B-29 restoration for a summer.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Reva Harris; and daughter Vicki Lynn Harris. He is survived by four children: Diane (Edward) Harris Holliman of Ferrum, VA; Steven Harris and David Harris, both of Eden; and Chuck (Kelsey) Harris of High Point, NC; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
