Virginia Duke Smart

Virginia Duke Smart, 88, of Eden, NC, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Gibson House, Hospice of Rockingham County in Wentworth, North Carolina.

Mrs. Smart was born December 29, 1934 in Rockingham County, North Carolina to Charles Gray Duke, Sr. and Lillian Lea Duke. She was a graduate of Tri-City High School and a 1956 graduate of Rex Hospital Nursing School in Raleigh. After graduating nursing school, she worked as a Registered Nurse at Tri-City Hospital and Morehead Hospital. Most of her time at Morehead Hospital was served in the Emergency Room Department.

After a career change, she earned her teaching certificate and taught at Morehead High School for 20 years. She taught Health Occupations I and II. Virginia also worked as an RN at Brian Center in Eden part-time after retiring from her 40-year full time work career.

She is survived by daughter, Jennie Fitts Fulton, son-in-law, Tom Fulton, three grandchildren, Nathaniel Fitts, Ann Fitts, Aaron Fulton, several great-grandchildren, brother, Phillip Duke, sister-in-law, Judy Duke, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garnet Nathaniel Smart, son-in-law, Harry Jones Fitts, brother, Charles Gray Duke, Jr., and sister, Elizabeth Duke Smith.

The family has requested no formal visitation.
