Sylvia Ann Smith of Eden, NC passed away Saturday afternoon, January 02, 2021. She was 86 years old.
A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, January 5, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Reidsville, NC. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 12:30pm - 1:30pm at Fair Funeral Home in Eden, before proceeding to the cemetery.
Sylvia was born in Eden, NC on December 13th, 1934. She was the youngest child of Thomas Daniel Smith and Della Eunice Smith, both deceased. Sylvia retired from DuPont in Martinsville, VA in 1985, after 30 years of service in beaming. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Ruffin, NC. She was adored by her 18 nieces and nephews, and considered the glue that brought all of the cousins together. Each knew that all roads led to Aunt Sylvia’s house, where a warm embrace, a hot cup of coffee, a porch swing and plenty of laughter could be found.
She loved travel and adventure, whether it was a month long, cross-country trip with her siblings, vacations with her nieces and nephews and their families, and even a trip to Israel to see the Holy Land, Jerusalem. She’s also remembered for teaching more than one new driver in the family how to “put the pedal to the metal”. Sylvia loved and cherished her family, celebrating each new niece and nephew as much as the very first one. Her presence will be greatly missed.
She is survived by one sister, Helen Overby of Flint, MI; 16 nieces and nephews; and a total of 71 great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her brothers, Melvin Smith and Calvin Smith, both of Eden, NC; sister, Laura Overby of Flint, MI; and sister, Della Nelson of Ridgeway, VA, as well as three nieces and two nephews. She was also preceded in death by her life-long dear friend Myrtle O’Dell of Eden, NC.
