Sanford James Curry

Sanford James Curry, 79, of 176 Staples Avenue, passsed away Tuesday afternoon, February 16, 2010 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County in Martinsville, VA. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, February 19, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Overlook Cemetery. Mr. Curry was born September 5, 1930 in Rockingham County, NC, son of the late Walker and Dora May Grant Curry. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a retiree of Fieldcrest Mills. Mr. Curry was known for his fur trapping and even wrote a book on the subject. He trapped in 16 counties in Virginia and North Carolina but was especially attached to Patrick County, Virginia, about which he wrote an article entitled "Trapping Among the Fairy Stones". Although trapping was his passion, during off-season he enjoyed making concrete ornaments. Surviving is his son, Rickey James Curry and fiancee', Melissa Neice of Rocky Mount, VA; his daughter, Donna Curry Smith and husband, Maynard of Eden; grandchildren, Shane Curry and wife, Teresa, Eugene Curry and wife, Ashley, Jessica Smith, and Crystal Smith, all of Eden; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Peggy Paul and husband, Jay of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Blanche Hearp and husband, Alfred of Reidsville. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Curry; sister, Margaret Wood; anda brothers, Matthew and Leonard Curry. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, 7 - 9 PM at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home of his son, Rickey, at 214 Highland Drive in Eden, NC.
