Samuel "Sammy" Gammons

May 1, 1952 — August 30, 2024

It is with solemn respect that we announce the passing of Mr. Samuel K. Gammons, known to friends and family as “Sam Bone”, on August 30, 2024. At the age of 72, Sam departed this world at UNC Rockingham Healthcare in Eden, NC. He spent his life with a tenacious spirit and an infectious sense of humor.

Sammy was known for his stubborn resilience and for being full of fight, embodying these traits in every aspect of his life. He was always ready to share a joke, making those around him laugh and feel loved. His hobbies including fishing, working on cars and lawnmowers and he had a surprising fondness for watching “Paw Patrol” which brought him joy and relaxation.

Sam is survived by his brother, Ralph Gammons (Linda), his sister, Inez Roberts; his aunt, Mary Anderson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members who revered him. His niece and caregiver, Linda Pulliam, his close friends and caregivers Ricky Jeffries and Terry Belton. He looked forward to seeing his nephew David Martin on Sundays. His great-great-nephew, Skyler Fox, who held a unique place in his heart.

Preceding him in passing were his parents, William Zeb and Catherine Ruth Merkey Gammons; his brothers; Clarence, Harold, Leonard, Charles and Edgar Gammons; his sisters; Mary Pauline Gammons, Betty Ruth Spencer and Irene Stevens. His dear friend, Josh Pruitt also precedes him in death and we find comfort in the belief that they are reunited in the hereafter.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, September 5th at 11:00am in the Fair Funeral Home Chapel.

In lieu of floral tributes, the family suggests that memorials be made in Sam’s name to Ancora Compassionate Care of Rockingham County. This organization provided Sam with care and solace during his final journey, for which his family is eternally grateful.
