Sallie Mae Slaughter Coone

April 12, 1931 — February 18, 2021

Sallie Mae Slaughter Coone, 89, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2021, at her home.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, February 21, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.  She will lie in repose on Saturday from 12 Noon to 6 PM at Fair Funeral Home.  The family will meet at the home of Andrea and John East, 5174 North Henry Street in Stoneville.

Born April 12, 1931 in Rockingham County, NC, Sallie was the daughter of the late Luther Madison Slaughter and Lillie Mae Hundley Slaughter.  She was a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church.  In her younger years, she worked at Fieldcrest Mills.  She enjoyed helping her late husband feed his students at Rockingham Community College where the students lovingly called her “MeMaw”.  Sallie also accompanied her late husband delivering donations from River Oak Church of God in Danville to the Smoky Mountain Children’s Home in Tennessee.  Above all, she was a devoted wife, loving mother and prayer warrior.

She is survived by her son, Bernie Coone and wife, Cindy, of Stoneville; two daughters, Brenda Jarrett and husband, Wyatt and Andrea East  and husband, John, both of Eden;  nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sister Pollie Purdy and husband, Johnny.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Norman Coone, Sr.; her son, Douglas Norman Coone, Jr.; and son-in-law, John Henry Mize, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375 or to Smoky Mountain Children’s Home, 449 McCarn Circle, Sevierville, TN 37862.
