Ruby Mae Buffkin Stewart, 75 of Stoneville, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at UNC Rockingham Hospital in Eden in the care of Hospice.
A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026, from 2-4pm, at Fair Funeral Home in Eden.
Ruby was born May 11, 1950, to Chester Howard and Caroline Burgess Buffkin in Martinsville, Va. She attended Martinsville High School and received her GED and teacher’s assistant certification from Rockingham Community College. Ruby worked as a teacher’s assistant at Stoneville Elementary School until her retirement in 2004.
In addition to her parents, Ruby is preceded in death by her sister, Linda Buffkin Porter.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Wayne Junior “Pee Wee” Stewart, of the home; daughter, Melissa Stewart Wingfield (Christopher) of Stoneville; sons, Karl Wayne Stewart (Tina) and Steven Wayne Stewart of Stoneville. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jacob Ashbrook Wingfield (Candace) of Madison, Valerie Stewart Martin (Isaiah) of Goldsboro, and Mattie Mason Wingfield-Pierson (Nathanael) of Greensboro; great-grandchildren, Eliana Ashbrook Wingfield and Oliver Nicholas Wingfield of Madison; siblings, Maxine Steele (Clifton) of Sandy Ridge, Patricia Tucker (Wess) of Gainesville, FL, Alice Campbell of Collinsville, VA, Halbert “Bud” Buffkin of Woodlawn, VA, Janet Doyle (Jerry) of Snow Creek, VA, Yvonne McPherson and Karen Harrison of Martinsville, VA, and Darlene Lambert of Tampa Bay, FL; lots of nieces and nephews. Ruby is also survived by many “bonus sons” whom she loved dearly.
