Rachel Blackwell South

August 2, 1930 — January 5, 2021

Rachel Blackwell South, 90, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 5, 2021, at Gibson House in Reidsville.

A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Monday, January 11, at Danview Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12:30pm to 1:30pm at Fair Funeral Home, prior to proceeding to the cemetery. The NC and Virginia Divisions of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will be doing a salute in Rachel’s memory for all her time and effort she, so willingly gave, to our organizations.

Born August 2, 1930 in Rockingham County, NC, Rachel was the daughter of the late John Bailey Blackwell and Martha Elizabeth Moore Blackwell.  She was a retiree of Fieldcrest Mills with 46 years of service and was a member of Draper Christian Church. Rachel was a proud member of Daughters of the Confederacy.

She is survived by her four children, Alma Biggs (John), J. C. South, Jr. (Kathy), Tony South (LeeAnn), and Chris South, all of Eden; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Coolidge “J. C.” South, Sr.; son, Ernest Young; daughter, Carlotta Tart; brother, Paul Blackwell; sister, Christine Wilson; three grandchildren, Bobbie Jean Belton, Laura Belton and Jeff Biggs; and a great-granddaughter, Nicole Young.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Gladys Jones who was Rachel’s caregiver.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Draper Christian Church, 1122 Fieldcrest Rd., Eden, NC 27288.
