Onis Alton Martin, 95, of Stoneville NC passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026. Alton was born on April 5, 1931 to Avery and Nellie Martin.
Alton entered military service in 1951, serving in the United States Army and being deployed to Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1953.
Alton returned to Stoneville and married Eloise Conway in 1955. Together they had two daughters, Dianne and Sharon. Alton and Eloise celebrated their 70th anniversary in 2025.
Alton had a servant’s heart and held many positions in his church and community. He was ordained a Deacon is 1969 and was awarded Deacon Emeritus status in 2017. He served on many committees in the church including Finance Committee and General Secretary of Sunday School. After retirement he continued to work in the church taking on the responsibility of cleaning the church each week. Alton served on the Town Council for the City of Stoneville and delivered Meals on Wheels for ten years.
Alton is preceded in death by his parents, Avery and Nellie Martin, his sister, Lula Scott, his brothers Lee J. Martin and Tony Martin and his daughter, Dianne Hankins. He leaves behind his wife, Eloise, daughter Sharon Mason (Rick), son-in-law, Eddie Hankins, grandchildren Adam and Will Hankins and Elizabeth Baxter, sisters Hazel Jones and Gaynelle Shepherd (Frank), as well as many nieces and nephews.
The service will be held at 11:00am Monday, April 27, 2026 at First Baptist Church of Stoneville with burial immediately following the service at Stoneville Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, from 10:00am – 11:00am.
The family extends gratitude to Karen Booth who provided care to Alton in his final days, Ancora Compassionate Care as well as those who offered kindness and strength our family.
