Mickey Walker Powell, 76, of 215 Taft Street, passed away Tuesday evening, March 8, 2011 at Morehead Memorial Hospital. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, March 11, at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens. Mr. Powell was born December 22, 1934 in Draper, son of the late Willie Brandeau and Vergie Hurd Powell. He was a US Army veteran and served in the US Army Reserves for 11 years. Mr. Powell was a member of First Baptist Church in Eden where he participated in the Men's Sunday School Class. In 1953 he graduated from Tri-City High School where he was an accomplished baseball player. Following high school Mr. Powell was a pitcher for the Draper YMCA team and later moved on to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a year and a half, then to Kansas City Athletics where he pitched for approximately a year and a half before suffering an injury which ended his baseball career. Mr. Powell retired from Centel / Sprint after 36 years of service as an installer and telephone lineman. In his private time he enjoyed deer and bear hunting as well as trout fishing. He was also a private pilot. Surviving is his wife of more than 55 years, Nancy Stovall Powell of the home; his only child, Mickey Walker Powell, Jr. of Eden, who was the light of his father's life; and sister-in-law, Dr. Judy Stovall Rivenbark and husband, Dr. William R. Rodgers, Jr. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Julius and Lucinda Overby Powell and Sally Stultz Hurd and Jess Hurd.
