Maxine Iley Matthews

Maxine Iley Matthews, age 98 of 109 Church St. Stoneville passed away June 21, 2015 at her home.

There will be a graveside service held Saturday June 27th, 2015 at 2pm in the Stoneville City Cemetery.

Mrs. Matthews was born January 18, 1917 in Harrisburg, NC to the late Harry Bernard and Blanche Williams Iley. She was a hair dresser but her main duty was being a homemaker to her family. Maxine was very active in the Stoneville Garden Club and a long time member of First Baptist Church of Stoneville, NC where she had been a member for 75 plus years.

Surviving are her son Leonard "Sonny" Matthews III and wife Georgia of Ridgeway, VA, one daughter Gloria M. Thompson and husband Joel of Boone, NC, 2 sisters Alma Morris, Grace Small and sister-in-law Martha Iley all of Harrisburg, NC, 7 grandchildren; Wally Matthews of Snow Camp, NC, Lee Matthews of Bynum, NC, Chris Matthews of Indiana, Cindy Sadler of Raleigh, NC, Zach Thompson of Zebulon, NC, Samuel Thompson of Hudson, NC, and Leah Thompson of Fairfax, VA; 8 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law (wife, of deceased son, Harry), Rachel Stanley Matthews of Raleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceeding her in death are her husband Leonard W. Matthews Jr. and her son Harry Leigh Matthews.

The visitation will be held 12:45pm until 1:45pm at Fair Funeral Home prior to the graveside service. Memorial contributions in her name can be made to: Hospice of Rockingham County: 2150 Hwy 65, Reidsville, NC 27320 and the local Gideons Inernational: 709 Washington St. Eden, NC 27288.
