Mary Sue Smith Surber

Mary Sue Smith Surber, age 85, of Arbor Ridge of Eden, formerly of Mountain Road, Martinsville passed away at Morehead Memorial Hospital on Sunday morning January 3, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 11 am Wednesday the 6th of January at Chatham Heights Baptist Church in Martinsville with burial to follow at Roselawn Burial Park. Mrs. Surber was born August 19, 1924 in Leaksville, NC to the late Fred D. Smith and Hattie Carter Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Alfred Surber, Sr. Mrs. Surber was a member of the Chatham Heights Baptist Church where she was active in the adult choir and senior choir. She was a long-time member and officer in Woodmen of the World. She was a homemaker and also taught kindergarten at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church after her children were grown. In addition she was well-known as a local humorist and storyteller and presented programs and recitations for many functions. Survivors include daughter Carol Surber Lewis and husband Jack of Oriskany, Va.; sons James A. "Jim" Surber, Jr. and wife Linda of Greensboro; Jeffrey S. Surber of Cantonsville, Md.; sisters Eunice Shreve and her late husband P.H.of Cary, NC; Ruby Hinson and her late husband James of Eden; brother Fred D. Smith,Jr. and wife Barbara of Eden; grandson Craig and triplet grandchildren Eric, Lauren, and Christin; sister-in-law Mary Surber and brother-in-law Robert Surber both of Burlington; and many loving friends and family including cousins, nieces and nephews. Special thanks to her caregiver Isamar Britto. Visitation will be held on Tuesday the 5th of January at Fair Funeral Home from 4-6 pm and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
