Marie Higgs

Marie S. Higgs, age 88, of St. Augustine, passed away on September 6, 2017 at the Bailey Family Center with her family by her side. She was born and raised in Eden, North Carolina to Isaac and Birdie Shelton and was one of 13 children. She had been residing in St. Augustine with her son Willard and daughter in law Kathy.  For most of her adult life she worked as a quiller operator for Fieldcrest Mills a textile company until she retired in the 1980’s.  Marie loved cooking for her family and making fried pies for community churches. She never met a stranger and was always helping friends and neighbors. She loved her hometown, gardening, dolls “Shirley Temple most of all”, and animals; her favorite animal was cats.  More than anything she loved her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

She was survived by her sons, Roger Dale Higgs “RD” (Linda Marcuse), of Richmond, VA., James Drewy Higgs of Danville, WA., Willard Wayne Higgs (Kathy) of St. Augustine, FL.; brother, Ike Shelton (Betty Shelton) of Newport News, VA; grandchildren, Elena Marcuse, Ian Marcuse, Tracy Haaland (Jon), of Seattle, WA, Jarred Higgs of VA., and other grandchildren and family.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening, October 6th, at Fair Funeral Home in Eden.
