Leone Gilley Eggleston, 96, passed from this life on March 12, 2015 at her home at 400 Boone Road in Eden.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, March 15, at 4 PM at Fair Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Lemuel Hardison officiating. Interment will follow in Overlook Cemetery.
Leone was born June 18, 1918, in Spray, NC to the late Joesph Cabell Gilley and Katie Snow Gilley. She graduated from Leaksville High School and attended King's Business College in Danville, VA. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She enjoyed participating with her husband, Gorris, in delivering Meals on Wheels and she also loved to knit and crochet, creating many beautiful pieces for her family. Leone and Gorris shared their love of gardening.
Leone was a devoted wife and mother, always giving of herself unselfishly to her family. She is preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Gorris James Eggleston, who was the love of her life, and by a brother, Dewey Cabell Gilley and a sister, Margaret Gilley Parker. She is survived by two sons, Joseph Benjamin Eggleston and wife, Agnes of Raleigh; James Harrison Eggleston of Eden and a daughter Elizabeth "Betty" Eggleston Self and husband, George D. "Buddy" Self of Greensboro. Grandsons include George Michael Self and wife, Cathy of Stafford, VA; Patrick Todd Self of Raleigh; Harrison Ford Eggleston and wife, Amanda of Eden; Joseph Benjamin Eggleston, Jr. and wife, Laura of Lawrence, KS. Granddaughters inclue Suzanne Self Bymaster and husband, Daniel of Greensboro; Amy Self Miller and husband, David of Greensboro; Hagan Eggleston Pace of Eden, and Karen Taylor Minton and husband, Benjie of Greenville, NC. There are 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and three nephews.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to a very special niece, Mary Johnston Gilley Schiller for her faithful devotion and many kindnesses over the years. Also, thanks to Shirley Williams, Barbara Little, Girla Sutliff and Patricia Fisher for their excellent care.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at Fair Funeral Home Chapel (3 - 4 PM), 432 Boone Road, Eden, and at other times at the residence on Boone Road.
