June Wren Myers

Mrs. June Wren Myers, 95, a resident of Arbor Acres Methodist Retirement Home, died on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Fitzgerald Health Center in Winston-Salem.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, March 23, at Leaksville United Methodist Church. A private burial will be held at a later date in Lawson Cemetery.

Mrs. Myers was born January 30, 1918 in Siler City, NC, the daughter of the late Junius Wren and Margaret Jane Parker Wren. Her mother died in the flu epidemic of 1918, so she and her sister went to live with their aunts in West Virginia. When her father married Cara Lambe Siler, the sisters were reunited with the family in Siler City. Mrs. Myers graduated from high school in 1934 and was the salutatorian of her class. She graduated from Greensboro College in 1938 with credentials to teach English, History and French and did teach for a few years. Mrs. Myers was the choir director at the Leaksville United Methodist Church in Eden for many years. She was an accomplished pianist, having learned to play at an early age under the guidance of her step-mother. Mrs. Myers enjoyed playing for others as an accompanist for a high school glee club, Sunday School classes, substitute organist in church or as an after-dinner entertainer for senior citizens. She was an accomplished writer, having gotten "the bug" to write in college. She wrote poems, essays and short stories for which she received awards at the Rockingham County Fine Arts Festival. Mrs. Myers was a lifelong democrat and a committed Christian.

Having had four successful marriages, Mrs. Myers helped to raise three children. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Lawrence Wilson in 1959. She is survived by their son, Lawrence Wilson (Francine) of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; granddaughter, Leigh Arden Beck (Joey) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; son, David Wilson (Anita) of Winston-Salem, NC; granddaughter, Dr. Amy Wilson (Dr. Ben Ott) of Salisbury, NC; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emma Ott; grandson, Brian Wilson (Rachel) of Garner, NC; great-granddaughter, Marley Wilson; daughter, June Hundley (Bob) of Spencer, NC; grandson, Bobby Hundley (Lauren) of Durham; granddaughter, Sallie Hundley of Salisbury. Mrs. Myers' second husband, Ray Butler, passed away in 1985. She is survived by Mr. Butler's sons, Bob Butler of Louisburg, NC and Lindley Butler (Lelia) of Reidsville; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. In 1993 she lost her third husband, Bill Craig and is survived by Mr. Craig's daughters, Peggy Bryant and Nancy Ryan of Cumming, GA; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her fourth husband, Reverend Horwood P. Myers, Jr., passed away in 2011. Mrs. Myers is survived by Reverend Myers' sons, Horwood P. Myers, III (Garland) of Boone, Thomas Myers (Barbara) of Clinton, NY and James Myers (Cynthia) of Charlotte; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother-in-law, Dr. Edwin G. Wilson (Emily) of Winston-Salem.

In addition to her parents and aforementioned husbands, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Dr. James C. Wren and sister, Margaret Wren Craig.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 23, 12:30 pm to 2 pm at Leaksville United Methodist Church, prior to the memorial service commencing at 2 pm.
