John Eugene (Gene) Setliff

March 3, 1927 — May 6, 2016

John Eugene (Gene) Setliff, 89, of 606 Prospect Street in Eden, passed away Friday evening, May 6, 2016, at Hospice of Rockingham County in Wentworth.

A graveside service will be held at 12pm on Tuesday May 10, 2016 at Dan View Cemetery with Rev. Sue Anne Morris officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Fair Funeral Home.

Gene was born March 3, 1927 in Rockingham County to the late John Emoryfield and Fannie Glenn Setliff. He was a graduate of Draper High School and was a Navy veteran. He worked at Fieldcrest Mills for many years before leaving to work for the United States Post Office in Eden and retired from there. Gene was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eden.

He is survived by his sons, John Setliff, Jr. (Karen) of Salisbury, David Setliff (Lisa) of Greensboro, Sam Setliff (Gail) of Eden, and Tom Setliff (Carlene) of Reidsville. Papa Gene is also survived by nine grandchildren, Philip Setliff (Christy) of Eden, Jessica Sharpe (Gary) of Eden, Justin Setliff (Brooke) of Ruffin, Austin Setliff (Christy) of Port Clinton, OH, Caleb Setliff of Reidsville, Katie Setliff (Robert) of Greensboro, Chris Setliff of Danville, VA, Emily Johnson (Matt) of Mooresville, and John Setliff, III of Wilmington and eleven great-grandchildren. Gene is also survived by his brothers Bill Setliff (Polly) of Eden, Bobby Setliff (Linda) of Little River, SC, his sister Pauline Overby of Cartersville, GA, his sisters-in-law, Katie Setliff of Greenville, Jane Duckett of Wilmington, Earline Law of Eden, and Lois Law of Roanoke, VA, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Ruth Law Setliff; infant son, James Setliff; sister, Ruby Setliff; brothers, Frank and Paul Setliff.

Johnny, David, and Tommy would like to thank Sammy and Gail for taking care of Dad for these past several years in their home.
