James Layton Wingfield, age 75, left his life surrounded by family and friends on August 6th, 2025.

A funeral service will be held at 2pm Monday, August 11, 2025 at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Wingfield Family Cemetery at 130 Matrimony Rd. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm Sunday, August 10, 2025 at Fair Funeral Home.

James was the son of Layton and Dora Wingfield and was born on March 9, 1950 in Leaksville, NC. He loved spending time with friends and family by hosting events, playing music, and working on various projects both at home and at work. James was the founder and proud owner of Wingfield Carpentry and Remodeling for more than 40 years. James embodied taking pride in a job well done and utilized his knowledge and experience to help people improve their homes and businesses with creativity, integrity, and a commitment to excellence. James had the belief that things should be “build to last” in both his personal relationships and in his profession. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and community.

James is survived by his wife of 24 years, Phyllis Wingfield; son, Jimmy Wingfield (LeeAnn) of Eden; granddaughter, Lakin Horsley (Trey) of Eden; great-grandson (due October 2025) Brooks James Horsley; step-daughter, Tammy Poindexter (Michael) of Eden, step-granddaughter, Brianna Poindexter (Nate) of Eden and their daughter, Oaklynn; step-grandson, Brenden Poindexter (Jessa) of Reidsville and their son, Dean; brother, Randy Wingfield of Ridgeway, brother, John Wingfield (Judy) of Patrick Springs; sister, Lucy Emerson (Albert) of Eden; sister, Carolyn Pulliam (Calvin) of Kernersville; sister, Phyllis Moorefield (Dennis) of Eden; brother-in-law, Phillip Toler of Eden; multiple nieces and nephews, and life-long friends, Jerry and Michelle Walker and Ronnie and Jackie Eggleston of Eden; special nephews, Steve Emerson (Stacey) of Eden and Jeff Nealy (June) of Axton and their daughter Devan Richardson (Adam) of Stoneville.

James was preceded in death by his parents Layton and Dora Wingfield, Brother Dillard Wingfield, sisters Naomi Chumley and Geneva Scott, sisters-in-law Jan Wingfield and Ruth Wingfield, and step-granddaughter, Kaitlynn Hop Poindexter.
