James Monroe “Cub” Underwood, 93, of Eden went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at UNC Rockingham Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at 11am Saturday, July 13, 2024 at Fair Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Dan View Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, from 10-11am, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel.
Cub, a lifetime native of Rockingham County, was born May 26, 1931, in Pittsylvania County to the late Cicero W. Underwood and Mollie Dyer Stratton Underwood. He was a faithful member of Gospel Tabernacle Church where he served as Sunday School teacher and special music singer. Cub served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954 as a Metal Smith, 3rd Class. Following his military service, Cub worked as a fixer at Karastan Rug Mill and then retired from Miller Can Plant in Reidsville where he worked as a Line Man.
Surviving are his loving wife of 72 years, Jo Ann DeHart Underwood; children, Harold W. Underwood (Debbie), Steve B. Underwood (June), Vance W. Underwood (Minnie), Tracie U. Chrismon (Jeff); grandchildren, Megan Tarrant (Mike), Valerie Nance (Jordan), Ashley Martin (Kevin), Taylor Amos (Hunter), Jake Chrismon (Megan); great-grandchildren, Benjamin Wesley Tarrant, Levi Weston Martin, Jack William Tarrant, Addisyn Rose Martin, Murphy James Monroe Amos; brother, George Underwood; many loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Cub is preceded in death by his brothers, Jesse, Claude, Cicero, Sam, Frank, Oscar, Billy; sisters, Mollie, Ruby, Elizabeth, and Sunshine.
