James Woodrow Spain, born on August 14, 1935, in Rockingham County, departed this life peacefully on September 26, 2025, at his home, after a short illness. He leaves behind a legacy marked by love, service, and cherished memories.
The funeral service for James Woodrow Spain will take place at Fair Funeral Home in Eden, North Carolina, on September 29, 2025, starting at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Ridgeview Cemetery. Family will receive visitors at other times at the home of his daughter, Michelle Curry, 113 Westfield Road, Eden, NC.
James had a commendable career in Research and Development at DuPont, demonstrating a commitment to innovation and excellence that was admired by his colleagues. His dedication to work was paralleled by his service in the United States Army, where he proudly served his country.
James cherished many hobbies and interests that brought him joy and fulfillment. He found great pleasure in mowing his yard, which he often described as meditative. Frequent visits to Dollywood, where he enjoyed the sounds of the gospel group Kingdom Heirs, were a highlight of his life, fostering numerous friendships along the way. He loved embarking on road trips to visit family, creating lasting memories during cross-country camping trips in his motor home. Playing cards, particularly the game Hand and Foot, was a favorite pastime where he gathered with loved ones, often sharing laughter and stories. James also loved flounder gigging.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Taylor Spain, and two daughters: Anita Spain Jennette and her husband Keith, and Michelle Spain Curry and her husband Kenny. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Brian Shockley, Ben Curry and his wife Sarah, Summer Craddock and her husband Brandon and Brandon Harbour. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Grayson Harbour, Emersyn Curry, Denver Craddock, and Charleigh Curry and Declan Craddock.
James is mourned by his sisters, Doris Spain Walker and Yvonne Spain Light, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends whose lives he touched.
He was predeceased in death by his first wife, Doris Rutledge Spain, and his parents, Thad and Pearl Smith Spain. sisters; Ruby Spain Miller, Kathleen Spain Tate and Marcell Spain Baker one brother, Walter Spain.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hospice Ancora for their compassionate care during James’ final days.
In lieu of flowers donations may be given to Ancora Compassionate Care in honor of James Woodrow Spain.
