James Norman Stephens

James Norman Stephens, 87, of Jonesboro, GA, formerly of Leaksville (Eden), NC, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2023.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Overlook Cemetery in Eden, NC.

James was born October 22, 1935, in Shrewberry, West Virginia, to the late Norman Thomas Stephens and Swannie Murray Stephens. He was a graduate of Tri-City Highschool and Wake Forest University. James was a former member of First Presbyterian Church in Eden. He served his country in the US Army as a Captain in the JAG Corps. James worked as an attorney with the Department of Health and Human Services in Georgia. James volunteered his time giving seniors tax advice over the years. James was an avid animal lover, rescued many animals over the years, and was a supporter of local humane societies. He also enjoyed reading and coin collecting.

Surviving are his children, Thomasine Hunt of Ridgeway, Ontario, Norman Thomas Stephens of Jonesboro, GA, and Darlene S. Simpson (Norman) of Eden, NC; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; cousins, Kathy Weaver, Barbara Trent, Robin Atkinson; and childhood friend, Irene Baker.

In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his first and only love, his wife, Jean Stephens.
