James Lawrence "Smitty" Smith

James Lawrence Smith, also known as “Smitty”, 90, of Eden, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023 at his home.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at 4pm at Overlook Cemetery in Eden. Visitation will be held from 3-3:45pm at Fair Funeral Home prior to proceeding to the cemetery. The family will receive friends at other times at the home, 1293 Delaware Ave, Eden.

James was born February 25, 1933, in Spray, NC, to the late J. Ruffin Smith and Edna Minter Smith. He served in the NC Army National Guard. James worked as a loom fixer at Fieldcrest Mills until his retirement. In his younger years, James liked boxing. He enjoyed building and racing cars. James liked mowing and gardening, eating breakfast at Church Street Station, and spending time with his dogs.

Surviving are his stepson, Bruce Hall (Joyce) of Reidsville; grandchildren, Jeanie Shropshire (Todd), Bruce Hall, Jr. (Mandy); great-grandchildren, Tyler Shropshire (Cesalea), Sydney Stephens (Jared), Brandon Shropshire (Fernanda), Justin Hall (Amy), Maegan Cobb (Joseph), Sage Hall; great-great-grandchildren, Aiden, Brantley, Corbin, Alden, Grayson, Kyler; niece and nephew, Robin Nelson and Ron Harbour.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his loving wife, Valerie Turner Smith, and sisters, Dot Harbour and Joann Nelson.
