Jacqueline “Jackie” Dishmond Chandler, 92, of Eden, NC died on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at UNC Rockingham Medical Center after a brief illness. Jackie was born on July 27, 1929 in Eden. She learned the value of determination and hard work and the importance of family from her mother Lavania, who as a single mother raised Jackie through the Great Depression with the help of their extended family. At 17, she married the love of her life, Calvin Chandler. They were married for 60 years. With her mother’s support, Jackie and Calvin built their home on Washington Steet. Jackie soon opened her beauty shop in the basement, where she would spend the next 70 years “fixing” hair for dozens of loyal customers. She was an expert seamstress, making and hemming all the clothes for her family. In later years, dear friends spent many hours gathered around her dining room table for weekly card games. Between the beauty shop, her friends, and her children and grandchildren, the Chandler home was always filled with the sounds of joyful laughter, the smell of delicious home cooked meals, and the faint hint of a “permanent.” Her home was a particular favorite in the community for the beautiful tree that filled her living room window at Christmastime.
Jackie grew up a member of Leaksville Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church in Eden. She served the church faithfully as a deacon and an elder. She taught Sunday School, served on the worship committee, and her gorgeous soprano voice was an integral part of the chancel choir. Her faith was so important to her, and she taught that faith to her children and grandchildren.
Jackie was preceded in death by her mother Lavania and her husband Calvin. Left to hold her in memory are her daughter Vicki Sharp and her friend Jerry Sharp; her son Greg Chandler (Beth); her grandchildren Kyle Goodman (Michelle); Wendi Stockstill and her fiancé David Mills; Josh Chandler (Brooke); Katie Chandler; Michael Sharp and his friend Maddi Beckemeyer; and her great-grandchildren Blake Stockstill, Breelyn Stockstill, Alleigh Chandler, Hayleigh Chandler, Maelyn Goodman, and Gentry Chandler. She had looked forward to welcoming David’s children Haven and Landon Mills into the family.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held in the Whitley Gathering Room of First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with her grandson Rev. Dr. Kyle Goodman officiating. A graveside committal service will follow at Ridge-View Cemetery. The family will greet friends in the Gathering Room beginning at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church, Eden or the Rockingham County Humane Society, 205 Boone Road, Eden, NC 27288. Fair Funeral Home is serving the Chandler family.
