Jackie “Lane” Woods, 70 of Stoneville passed away peacefully at his home on June 9, 2025, surrounded by his family. Lane was born on April 17, 1955 in Rockingham County to the late Thomas Edgar and Kathleen Harmon Woods, both of Eden.

A graveside service will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Dan View Cemetery in Eden. Visitation will be held prior to the service, from 10:30am - 11:45am at Draper Christian Church in Eden on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

Additionally, a service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 2 PM at Draper Christian Church.

The family asks that friends and family wear Red to the service, in honor of Lane’s Favorite color and the Tunstall Baseball team colors.

Lane grew up on Carolina Avenue in Eden and was a Draper boy through and through. He spent his youth at the Draper Y, the ballpark, and pool. He played just about any sport he could, and excelled in Football and Baseball at Morehead High School, of which he was a 1973 graduate. Lane continued his love for Baseball beyond high school and was proud to have played baseball at Campbell University. After transferring and graduating from Appalachian State University, Lane desired nothing more than to give back to his community and the surrounding area by becoming a teacher and coach. Lane taught at Gretna High School Morehead High, Stoneville High, Madison-Mayodan High, Reidsville High, McMichael High, and finished his career in Virginia at Tunstall High. During his tenure at Tunstall, the baseball team won back-to-back State Titles; a memory he always cherished. Lane, or “Coach Woods” to most, was more than a coach to his players; and was a wonderful role model, mentor, and friend to all.

What most will likely remember is Lane’s humor and playful spirit. He was always playing jokes; and loved to fret his mother and especially his siblings, Pat, Tommy, Bobby, and Ronnie. Everyone could count on Lane to lighten the mood or make everyone laugh, in any situation. You hardly knew when he was being serious or not, but no one ever questioned his loyalty and devotion to his students, church, friends, and family.

As Lane and Marty started their life together, Lane found out very quickly that a life with a house full of girls was a true experience. Their love of adventure, passion for sports, and love of family guided their thirty-one years together. They loved to visit Major League Ballparks, especially the NY Yankees; and take trips to anywhere with a steam-engine train! They loved the beach, the mountains, and everywhere in between - as long as they were together; and often with family. The trip to New York City when the kids were teenagers will always be remembered fondly and the attempt to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will forever be a hilarious memory; mostly due to Lane! The two taught and coached sports and it was part of their lives. In his last years, Lane was even part of the coaching staff for the McMichael Volleyball State Championships!

In addition to his parents, Lane was preceded in death by his brother Tommy Woods and his Mother and Father-in-Law, Delores and Buster Tucker.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marcia “Marty” Woods of the home. His children Sally Woods (Rodney), Nathan Woods (Toni), and Chris Woods; his step-children Stephanie Wray (John), Tiffanie Madison (Josh), and Dana Eaker (AJ). In addition, Lane is survived by 17 grandchildren; Jacob, Anna, Noah, Abby, Maya, Karlie, Ross, Tyler, Kennedy, Konnor, and Kolton Woods; Emma and Sam Wray, Maggie Jane Dalton & Ruthie Rae Madison; and Annie Kate & Calvin Eaker. Lane enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, who lovingly named him “Papa Coach” and they enjoyed all of the fun times together at the pool, ballpark, volleyball court, the trips, and the many family gatherings. Lane is also survived by his brothers Ronnie Woods (Leisa), Bobby Woods (Denise), sister Pat Woods Edwards (John “Tenny”), sisters-in-law Cheryl Essex, Laurie Seeney (Larry), Susan Woods Ashworth, and brother-in-law Todd Tucker. A large family comes with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family left to cherish his memory. And although not blood related, Lane is survived by the hundreds of students and athletes that he taught or coached over the years.

The family would like to extend a special Thank You to his Draper Christian Church family, his caregivers (Donna, Keisha, Connie, Corey & Onji), and the staff at Ancora Compassionate Care for their love and support throughout the time of Lane’s declining health. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Draper Christian Church in Lane’s memory.
