Fred Thomas Hand, 90, of
Shadygrove Road, Eden, peacefully left for his heavenly home on Monday, May 2, 2022 at his home.
A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at Fair Funeral Home Chapel in
Eden, N.C. Visitation with the family is planned prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Fred was born on February 7, 1932 in
Madison, N.C. to the late Bartley and India Hand. While stationed at Eglin Air Force Base serving in the United States Air Force, he met the love of his life, Dorothy (Dottie) Caudill Hand. They were married on June 2, 1955 in
Eglin, Florida. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force on November 1, 1955. After moving back to
Rockingham County, Fred gave his life to the Lord and was baptized on July 30, 1961 at Leakesville Christian Church, He faithfully led his family to serve the Lord and was ordained as a deacon on July 15, 1962 and later as an elder. Fred later became a member of Draper Christian Church where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher for many years. Fred began working for
Karastan Service Center in May, 1964 and was later promoted to supervisor before becoming the owner of Smith and Lane Appliances in
Eden. He retired in 1996 when he sold that business.
After his retirement, Fred found great pleasure working in the garden or fixing something in the workshop. He spent many hours serving the church family at Draper Christian with his wisdom, teaching, and encouragement. He was known for doing a job well and doing it right. He loved his family and found joy in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Dottie Hand, his sons, Tom Hand (Sherrie) of Madison, N.C., and Greg Hand (Tammy) of Gasburg, Virginia; his grandchildren, Lynn Hand White (David) of Youngsville, N.C., Robert Hand (Kate) of Franklinton, N.C., and Matt Hand (Megan) of Fishersville, Virginia; Great-grandchildren, Joshua White, Malina Hand, Lilly Hand, Jackson Hand, Holton Hand, Hayes Hand, and Lana Hand; his special neighbors, Scott and Laura Bryant, and Larry and Linda Joyce; loving nieces and nephews and several special cousins.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Bartley and India Hand, his brother, Willard Hand, his sister, Janie Hand, and brother, Ray Hand.
The family would like to thank the family of Draper Christian Church and Hospice of Rockingham County for their love and support over the past month. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Fred’s memory be made to Draper Christian Church,
