Faye H. Wood, 78, died peacefully at Moses Cone Hospital on Friday, November 29, 2024.
Born in Leakesville, NC (Eden) on June 6, 1946 to Boyd Higgs and Helen Skinner, Faye and her brother Buddy were raised by her paternal grandparents Cabble and Hattie Higgs. Faye was a proud graduate of Morehead High School. After school, she worked for DuPont in Martinsville, VA, where she met the love of her life, Melvin E. Wood. Faye and Melvin were married on January 23, 1971. They had two daughters and made their life together on the Wood family farm on Folk Hill in Wentworth, NC. After Dupont, Faye worked at Rockingham High School as a special education assistant, and she worked for many years at Wentworth Elementary School as a first-grade teacher’s assistant.
Faye was a member of North Spray Christian Church for more than 50 years. She was the secretary for the church board, a frequent worship leader, and a member of the choir. She particularly enjoyed serving communion. She also enjoyed working with the church’s children and youth. She was the long-time president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She continued in that role, even after her health prevented her from attending church services in person. Her faith shaped every part of her life. Her actions embodied the golden rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Faye was also a member of the American Business Women’s Association. She chaired newsletter and directory committees. In 1994, they named her “Woman of the Year.” One of Faye’s greatest passions was fishing. She loved to pier fish at Emerald Isle, but she was also content to fish the two ponds on her land. Her fishing tales were legendary, if dubiously true. Faye loved to sing. She would find her way to the piano at many social gatherings. She loved card games and Rummikub, where she blended skill with unnatural luck. In her earlier years, she loved to paint ceramics. She loved watching ball games of all sorts, especially football and Tarheel basketball. She was actively involved in Chris and Michelle’s childhood activities, from drum major in the band, to softball, piano lessons, and horseback riding. Faye had a magnetic personality. She never met a stranger, and people quickly came to love her. She hardly left home without running into a friend or a student she taught in Rockingham and Guilford Counties.
Faye was preceded in death by her husband Melvin, her parents and grandparents, her brother Matthew “Buddy” Higgs and her sister Judy Higgs. Left to carry her memory are daughters, Christine Scott (Matt) and Michelle Goodman (Kyle), grandchildren, Ashley Crowder (Dre), Justin Crowder, Katelyn Scott, Peyton Scott, Maelyn Goodman, great-grandchildren, Ayden Edmonds and Lillian Edmonds (due this February), brother, Ron Higgs, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank her home health and palliative care nurses, Guilford Health, and Brookdale Northwest for their attentive care through the years. The family would also like to thank all her friends and neighbors who helped her live in her home when she could no longer drive.
