Elon Saunders Cook, born on September 5, 1934, in Rockingham County, North Carolina, passed away on August 16, 2024 at the Bermuda Commons Nursing and Rehab Center. A dedicated educator, Elon served as a Senior High School teacher employed by Rockingham County Schools, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless students throughout his career.

Elon's academic achievements were commendable. He graduated from Leaksville High School before attending Syracuse University in New York, where he was honored to be the Valedictorian of the Language School. He furthered his education at High Point University and later obtained a Master’s Degree from A&T State University.

In addition to his substantial contributions to education, Elon proudly served in the United States Air Force, demonstrating a commitment to his country. A member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, he held several positions of leadership within the community, including serving as the President of the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE), a Sunday School Teacher, and a Vestry Member. His involvement in the church and educational organizations reflects his dedication to service and the betterment of those around him.

Known by many as "The Apple Man", Elon enjoyed selling his apples every year. This allowed him to make new friends as well as connect with many friends from the past. Although it was hard work, Elon often said that it warmed his heart to see people excited about his apples.

Elon is survived by his beloved daughters, Renee Williams (Bobby) of Yadkinville, NC, and Denise Dalton of Hope Mills, NC. He cherished his role as a father and was blessed with five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also remembered by his half-brother, Donnie Cook of Eden.

Elon was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rebecca Ann Overby Cook, his father, Walter Nelson Cook, and his mother, Daisy Gilbert Cook. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Henderson Cook and Sylvester Cook, and his sisters, Olivia Ahren and Loretta Washburn.

A funeral service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church , on Wednesday,  August 21, 2024, at 2:00 PM, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Military Honors will be provided by the Rockingham County Veteran's Honor Guard in Overlook Cemetery following the funeral service. Elon's legacy of education, service, and family will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
