Eddie Earl Hurst

Eddie Earl Hurst, 81, formerly of Eden, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2024 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

A graveside service will be held at 2pm Saturday, August 10, 2024 at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens in Eden. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, from 1, at Fair Funeral Home in Eden.

Eddie was born September 25, 1942 in Leaksville, NC, to the late Earl Booker Hurst and Lucille French Hurst.

Eddie was brought up in God’s Church and he, in turn, brought up his family in The Church. He had one daughter, Amy, and one son, David, and five grandchildren.

Eddie served in church leadership for 31 years, as a Deacon or an Elder. He was Chairman of the Board for 15 years.

Eddie served 4 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force. Some of his time in the Air Force was serving Germany and Alaska.

Eddie attended, and graduated, from National Business College in Roanoke, Virginia, with an Associate Degree in Business Administration – Management, with focus in Accounting. He was immediately employed by the former American Tobacco Company, in Reidsville, where he worked for 27 years. He primarily worked in the Accounting Office, where he eventually became a Supervisor, as well as, Supervisor of Computer Operations and a weekly payroll of 2,000 employees. He retired in 1993, at the age of 51.

Eddie served as a “Patient Care Volunteer” for 21 years, with Hospice of Rockingham County. He enjoyed being an FCC Licensed Ham Radio Operator and he competed in sanctioned Bowling Leagues for 40 years. He also managed a men’s softball team for 3 years in the Eden City Softball League, where the Team’s total winning percentage was .750 or won 3 out of every 4 games for 3 years, about 60 games. One year, they entered the District Championship Game, Undefeated, in a double elimination tournament and the result was ----- not ideal. Eddie also spent time “oil Painting” where he enjoyed painting landscapes, not of professional quality but good enough for it to be a hobby.

Surviving are his daughter, Amy Hurst Evans (Steve) of Gibsonville, son, David Earl Hurst (Kaitlyn) of Stokesdale; brother, Sammy Hurst (Wanda) of Eden; grandchildren, Lindsey Peoples (Caleb), Ethan Hurst, Hannah Hurst, Abigail Hurst, Atlee Hurst, Aubree Dillon; second wife, Carol Jean Terra; first wife, Susan Koontz Hurst.
