Dorothy Lidieth Vernon Harris, 89, formerly of Highway 87 North in Eden, but more recently of 2223 Old Leaksville Road in Ridgeway, VA, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden. A graveside service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday morning, January 5, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Harris was born July 18, 1923 in Leaksville, NC, daughter of the late Jesse and Effie Dixon Vernon. She graduated from Leaksville High School in 1940 and later from Hollingsworth Comptometer School in Charlotte. The skills learned at this school were in high demand as few people were able to use a comptometer, which was a key-driven mechanical calculator that was said to be faster than even electronic calculators at the time of their useage. Mrs. Harris retired from the billing department of the blanket mill office at Pillowtex. She was a member of Ridgeway Church of Christ. She is survived by her daughter, Nadine Harris Knight and husband, Tom of Ridgeway; son-in-law, Randy Shropshire and wife, Renee; three grandchildren, Traci Knight Morton of Ridgeway, Joshua Knight of Stoneville and Shea Shropshire Stacy of Chesapeake, VA; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Luther Harris whom she married in 1944; cherished daughter, Melody Harris Shropshire; and three brothers, James, Dallas and Jesse Vernon, Jr. There will be no formal visitation, however, the family will receive friends at the home, 2223 Old Leaksville Road, Ridgeway. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.fairfuneralhome.com
