Curtis Leon Walker of Surfside Beach, SC, passed away on August 9, 2026. Leon was born in Leaksville, NC, (now known as Eden, NC) on 5/20/1935 to D. Curtis and Blanche L. Walker. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, his twin sister Lavonne Hall, identical twin brothers Raenord and Raeford Walker, brothers Elwood Walker, J.W. Talley, Dewey Talley, sisters Helen Hancock, Lucille Simpson, Pat Thompson, and nephew Lawrence Talley, and many other very dear nieces and nephews.
Leon is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gail Walker, his children Greg (Susan) Walker of Winston-Salem, NC, Jeff Walker of Frisco, TX, Kristie (Bill) Benson of Surfside Beach, SC, 9 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
Leon shared a love of basketball with his twin brothers, Raenord and Raeford, playing in two North Carolina State Championship games at Tri-City High School (Morehead). Leon and Gail met in high school and were married on November 12, 1955, at Eden 1st Church of the Brethren, where they were both members.
Leon worked at Dupont for 21 years prior to his retirement and served in the National Guard for 8 years. He was a devoted Tarheel fan. One of his prized possessions was a picture taken with Roy Williams, their coach. He also loved gospel music, attended many Gaither concerts, and always eagerly shared his newest DVD when anyone visited. Leon was an avid golfer, softball player, umpire, & referee. Many fond memories were made on mountain golf trips with his twin brothers (Raenord and Raeford), Bobby Griggs, Nick Nichols, and many other lifelong friends. Leon was always quick with a joke, and we are sure that is how he would like to be remembered.
A memorial service will be held at a later date – In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Eden First Church of the Brethren, 730 Church St, Eden, NC 27288, or Caris Healthcare/Hospice, 174 Waccamaw Medical Park Ct., Conway, SC 29526.
