Charles Elwood Carter, a cherished community member and devoted family man, passed away on October 17, 2025, at Moses Cone Hospital. Born on December 30, 1937, in Rockingham County, Charles lived a life characterized by hard work, commitment, and love.

As an owner and operator of Carter Automotive, Charles shared his passion for mechanics with many, guiding not only his business but also the many families who benefited from his skilled hands and keen understanding of automobiles. His dedication to his craft was matched only by his love for his family and his commitment to his church community.

Charles was blessed to share a fulfilling marriage with his beloved wife, Gayle Geraldine Booth Carter, for an incredible 65 years. Their bond was a testament to love, resilience, and shared values that resonated throughout their family. Together, they cultivated a life rich in family ties and community connections.

He is survived by his sons, Charlie Carter and his wife Dare, and Mark Carter and his wife Lisa, along with his daughters, Teresa Mullins and belated husband Gene, Sandra Stegall and her husband B.J., Robin Hayden and her husband Dean, and Michelle Gray and her husband Jerry. Charles's legacy continues through his 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Although he encountered challenges in life, including the loss of his son's Charles R. Carter and John F. Carter and grandson Madison Paul Carter, Charles remained a loving husband, father, and papa—an unwavering pillar of strength for his family. He enjoyed simple pleasures, including spending time on his Bob Cat and tractor, which brought him joy in the embrace of nature.

Charles Elwood Carter’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love for his family, dedication to his work, and a deep commitment to his faith. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to resonate within the lives he touched. His family and friends celebrate his journey and hold his memory close, knowing that he leaves behind a legacy of love, commitment, and unwavering support. The family will receive relatives and friends during other times at the home of Charles and Geraldine Carter; 150 Cricket Rd., Eden, NC, 27288.
