Caleb Joseph Land passed away Saturday morning, Sept 24, 2011 at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne Florida. He was 90 years old and a cancer survivor having been free of lymphoma for over 7 years. A funeral service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, Oct 1, 2011 at Stoneville Baptist Church followed by internment at Stoneville City Cemetery. Joe graduated from Leaksville High School in1942 and eloped with Edna Leaona Balser to Madison NC where they were married on May 27, 1942. Joe entered WWII in the fall of 1942 and served his country in Italy at Anzio Beach Head, Rome, the Po Valley, Milan, and Venice returning in 1945. Edna supported the war effort at home while he was away. Joe was a devout Christian and served as deacon of the Stoneville Baptist Church for over 50 years. He was recognized by the church as Deacon Emeritus for his years of dedication to the ministry. Joe and Edna farmed in Stoneville, NC for many years and ran a general store on the Price Road between Stoneville and Eden NC. Both were members of the Matrimony Grange and the Stoneville Baptist Church. He is survived by his two sons, Carlton Joseph Land of Melbourne Florida, and Donald Caleb Land of Greensboro, North Carolina. Joe is the son of Caleb McCown and Maggie Fisher Land of Spray, North Carolina and had a brother James, and two sisters Catherine and Mildred all of whom are deceased.
